What Is Hypnotherapy, Really? Myths and Truths

If you have ever wondered what is hypnotherapy and whether it could actually help you, you are in very good company. It is one of the most misunderstood therapies out there, largely thanks to stage shows and films. So let me clear the fog and tell you honestly what it is, what it is not, and why it can be so effective.

After more than seven years and over 3,500 hours of clinical experience, I have seen hypnotherapy help people with anxiety, confidence, IBS, trauma and far more. But before any of that helps you, it is worth understanding what is really going on. Let us separate the myths from the truths.

So, what is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is the use of a relaxed, focused state of mind, often called trance, to help create positive change in how you think, feel and behave. That is really it. There is nothing mystical or sinister about it.

You already enter trance like states every single day. When you drive a familiar route and barely remember the journey, when you lose yourself in a film or a book, or when you daydream and the world fades for a moment, that is a natural trance. Hypnotherapy simply guides you into that comfortable state on purpose, so we can do helpful work while your mind is relaxed and receptive.

Trance is not sleep, and it is not unconsciousness. It is simply focused, relaxed attention, and you experience it naturally all the time.

Why work with the subconscious at all?

Why work with the subconscious at all?

Here is the heart of why hypnotherapy reaches places that talking alone sometimes cannot. Around 90 to 95 percent of our thoughts and behaviours come from the subconscious mind. It runs our habits, our automatic reactions, our deep seated beliefs and our fears, all without us consciously choosing them.

This is why you can know, logically, that a spider is harmless and still feel your heart race. Your conscious mind understands, but your subconscious has not got the message. Hypnotherapy lets us communicate with that deeper part of the mind directly, which is exactly where lasting change so often needs to happen.

Busting the most common myths

Let me tackle the worries I hear most often, because nearly everyone arrives with a few.

  • "You will control my mind." Absolutely not. You stay fully in control the entire time. I cannot make you do anything against your will or your values, and you could stand up and leave whenever you wished.
  • "I might get stuck in trance." This simply cannot happen. Trance is a natural state you drift in and out of daily. At the end of a session you return to full alertness easily, and if you needed to, you would do so on your own.
  • "I will be unconscious or asleep." No. You remain aware throughout. Most people hear everything I say and remember the session afterwards. It feels rather like that pleasant drowsy state just before sleep.
  • "You will make me cluck like a chicken." That is stage hypnosis, which is entertainment, not therapy. The two have almost nothing in common.
  • "It only works on certain people." Because trance is a natural ability we all have, almost anyone can benefit, as long as you are willing and comfortable.

The simple truth

Hypnotherapy is safe and natural. You are an active participant, not a passive subject, and the whole process is a collaboration between us.

People are often surprised by how ordinary and pleasant it feels. There is no swinging watch and no clicking fingers. A typical session with me looks something like this.

First, we talk. We discuss how things have been, what is going well and what you would like to be different. I work in a solution-focused way, which means we spend our energy on where you want to go rather than endlessly raking over the past.

Then comes the relaxation. I guide you, with my voice, into a calm and comfortable state. You simply sit back, close your eyes and let yourself relax. While you are in this peaceful state, I offer gentle, positive suggestions that help your subconscious build new, healthier patterns.

You leave feeling calm and often lighter, much as you might after a really good rest. Many people find the sessions deeply relaxing in their own right.

What hypnotherapy can help with

Because it works at the subconscious level, hypnotherapy can support a wide range of issues. In my practice I regularly help people with:

It is important to say that hypnotherapy complements rather than replaces medical care. It works wonderfully alongside the support of your GP or other healthcare professionals, and I will always encourage you to keep them involved where it matters. If you have more questions, you may find my FAQ page helpful too.

Is it actually effective, and how long does it take?

Solution-focused hypnotherapy is designed to be relatively brief. We are not aiming for years of sessions. Rather, we work together over a focused period to help you reach the change you came for. I am so confident in the approach that I offer a six week, six session money back assurance, because I want you to feel safe giving it a real go.

Results vary from person to person, as we are all different, but the combination of relaxation, positive focus and subconscious change is a powerful one. Many clients notice shifts within just a few sessions.
