Will I Lose Control Under Hypnosis? What Trance Really Feels Like

It is one of the first questions almost everyone asks me, often with a nervous little laugh. Will I lose control? Will you make me cluck like a chicken? I completely understand why people wonder what hypnosis feels like, because the version most of us have seen comes from stage shows and films. Let me put your mind at rest, because the reality is far gentler, far more ordinary, and far more reassuring than you might imagine.
Where the fear of losing control comes from
Most worries about hypnosis trace back to two places: stage hypnosis and dramatic portrayals in films. On stage, people seem to do silly things on command, and it looks as though the hypnotist holds all the power. In films, hypnosis is often used as a sinister plot device, with someone being controlled against their will.
Neither of these has much to do with what I do in my consulting room. Stage hypnosis relies on willing volunteers who want to perform, a bit of social pressure, and clever showmanship. Clinical hypnotherapy is a calm, collaborative, therapeutic process. The aim is not entertainment. The aim is to help you feel better and to make changes that matter to you.
So if your only reference point is the telly, it is no wonder the idea feels a little unnerving. The good news is that the truth is much kinder.

What hypnosis feels like in reality
Here is the honest answer to what hypnosis feels like: it feels like that pleasant, drifty state you slip into many times a day without even noticing.
Think about the last time you were absorbed in a good book and missed your stop on the train. Or when you drove a familiar route and arrived home with no memory of the journey. Or those few soft minutes just before you fall asleep, when your body feels heavy and your thoughts wander. That is trance. It is simply a relaxed, focused state, a bit like daydreaming.
When you are in hypnosis with me, you might notice:
- A pleasant heaviness in your arms and legs, or sometimes a floaty lightness.
- Slower, deeper breathing as your body relaxes.
- An awareness of sounds around you, which is completely normal.
- A sense of being deeply calm yet still able to think and respond.
- Time feeling as though it has stretched or shrunk a little.
You do not go unconscious. You do not go to sleep. You are not in some mysterious other dimension. You are simply relaxed and focused, with your attention gently guided inwards.
Why you never lose control
This is the part I most want you to hear. You remain in control the entire time.
Hypnosis is not something done to you. It is something we do together. I cannot make you do anything that goes against your values, your morals or your wishes. If I suggested something you were not comfortable with, you would simply ignore it, or you would open your eyes. Your mind has a built in protector that stays on duty throughout.
Hypnosis is a state of focused relaxation that you allow, not a force that overpowers you. You are always the one in the driving seat.
In fact, many people are surprised by how aware they feel. They can hear my voice, they know where they are, and afterwards they often say, "I do not think I was even under." Yet the relaxed, focused state still does its quiet work, because it gives us access to the part of the mind where lasting change happens.

Reaching the subconscious, gently
Around 90 to 95 percent of our thoughts, habits and behaviours sit in the subconscious mind. That is why willpower alone so often fails us, and why we can know exactly what we want to do yet still feel stuck.
Talk therapy works at the conscious, thinking level, and it has real value. But hypnotherapy reaches a little deeper, into the part of the mind that runs the show behind the scenes. By guiding you into that calm, focused state, we can gently encourage the subconscious to loosen old patterns and take on more helpful ones.
This is not about control. It is about cooperation. Your subconscious is on your side. We are simply giving it a quieter space in which to listen.
What we actually do in a session
In a solution focused session, we spend a good portion of the time talking, looking forwards rather than raking over the past. We focus on what is going well, what you want more of, and the small steps that move you towards it. The hypnosis part comes at the end, when I guide you into relaxation and offer calm, positive suggestions that reflect everything we have discussed.
You stay comfortable in a chair the whole time. There is no swinging watch, no clicking of fingers, no theatrics. Just a calm voice, a relaxed body, and a mind that is quietly working in your favour.
Common myths, gently corrected
Let me clear up a few of the things people often believe.
- "I will reveal my secrets." No. You are not compelled to say anything, and many people barely speak at all during the hypnosis itself.
- "I might get stuck in trance." This cannot happen. At worst you would drift into a brief natural sleep and wake up as normal.
- "It only works on weak minded people." The opposite is closer to the truth. People who can focus and use their imagination often respond beautifully.
- "I will not remember anything." Most people remember the whole thing, rather like remembering a film they watched while relaxed.
If you would like more reassurance about any of this, my frequently asked questions page covers the most common concerns in a bit more detail.
A few things you can try today
You do not need to be in my room to experience how safe and natural this drifty state can feel. Try this simple exercise to get a sense of it.
- Sit somewhere comfortable and let your shoulders drop.
- Take a slow breath in for a count of four, then out for a count of six. Repeat five times.
- Let your eyes rest on a single point ahead of you and allow them to feel heavy.
- Notice the sounds around you without reacting to them, just letting them be.
- Picture somewhere calm and let yourself dwell there for a minute or two.
That soft, settled feeling is the doorway to trance. Notice how you stayed completely in control the whole time, and how you could stop whenever you chose.
Hypnotherapy complements your wider wellbeing and any medical care you receive, rather than replacing it, so it sits comfortably alongside the support you already have.

You are always safe, and always in charge
If the fear of losing control has been holding you back, I hope this has softened it. Trance is not a loss of control. It is a deeply relaxed, focused state that you allow, with your safety and your wishes protected throughout. It is one of the most natural things in the world, and you have already experienced versions of it many times.
If you are curious but still a little unsure, that is perfectly normal, and there is no pressure at all. Why not book a free discovery call with me? It is a relaxed, no obligation chat where you can ask me anything, including all your questions about staying in control. I would love to put your mind at ease and show you just how gentle this work can be.
When you are ready, get in touch and we can take that first small step together.
